Kia ora! Welcome to This is the Place : Ko Tenei te Wahi!

This website project began from a conversation about the significance of place names - what they represent and the stories they carry, both of the past and the present.

This is the Place : Ko Tenei Te Wahi has inspired contributors from dozens of individuals and organisations, who see the value in the role this website will play in our future, as a living document collecting the stories of Northland places.

This project was made possible by the vision and inspirational ideas of the Blue Orb Charitable Trust, funding from the DIA Digital Strategy Community Partnership Funding, and contributions of time and expertise from many others.

The website was designed and built by Northland creative design company Big Fish Creative, and went live on 30 September 2008.

Alongside the technical design and build, a small community liaison team, including writers, photographers and oral historians, was  engaged to gather content for the launch of the site. This work was invaluable in giving individuals and groups within the communities of Northland a chance to guide and shape the project. It is now up to the communities of Northland to grow and support the website.

The design of the site encourages those who are taking their first steps in the computer world, with easy to follow pathways and a friendly environment for those unfamiliar with computers and technology.

What better way to begin to contribute to the world wide web that with a story about your place?
