Author: Margaret Hunter     Publisher: Diane Hunter         Family Name: Hunter

Zane Grey and early Deepsea game fishing My Grandfather Thomas Frank Capper Elliott , Known as Frank plus his son Frank [Junior ] lived and worked the boats with Zane Grey from Urapukapuka Island. Housed in tents at the Camp they owned the Boats the "Otehei", and "Manaaki" sister ships and similar build as the "Alma G" etc. about 1920 era . To my knowledge the "Manaaki" is still in the Bay of Islands - 2011 AD. "Otehei," was sighted in the Whangarei Harbour, although she spent a period on Lake Tau[po. I would be interested in hearing ftom the current owners as a family we feel connected to this story. Margaret Hunter nee Elliott

The Launch Otehei is owned by the
Eldorado Trust, Alma G by an Auckland (?)
private Trust, and Zane Grey (Alma G
II) is privately owned at Tapu Point (Bay
of Islands) and is currently under
full restoration. Manaaki - unsure but will
find out. Other launches - Idle
Along (Fred Baker - Urupukapuka Is) under full
restoration in Auckland, and
Ozone (Harold Viopond 1920's) last sketchy report
was 10 years ago, it was seen
in a dilapiated state bing an ex long line fishing
boat in the Leigh Sandspit
area. Avalon (Peter Williams) was converted back to
original configuration and
shipped a number of years ago to an American museum
as a Zane Grey exhibit.

I think "Alma G and Alma G 2" were both built by Collins and Bell of
Auckland for the Arlidge Brothers and named after their cousin "Alma
Green" who financed them.
There were several boats built to this design,
Avalon being just one of them.
