My Mother's family comes from a small place called Pipiwai which is about 40 mins NW of Kamo. I went out there recently with a mate for the day to the old family homestead which was built by my Great Grandfather Jack Henare about 80 or so years ago.
We arrived out there early because my plan was to climb the local Mt known to the locals as "Mt Manukorihi", it's the second highest Mt in the Pipiwai Valley after Mt Motatau. The terrain was step and wet so we took things slow but after about 30 mins of climbing my fear of heights kicked in and I only got about 3/4 of the way up the Mt and waited there for my mate who actually climbed to the top!
About 10 years ago my Mother's family had sold most of my Great Grandfather's land in Pipiwai which left the family with only 7 acres around the homestead but a few years ago my Aunt had purchased all 120 acres back so after the climb we decided to take a look around the property. We came across an area of bush where the Pungas grow so lush we weren't too sure if they were Pungas lol.
After coming out of the bush we decided to take a look down at the local Marae, I'm not too sure how old the Marae is but it was built by my Great Grandfather Jack and his brothers including Tau Henare Senior.
