The wreck of the Waikato sits in Ngunguru Bay about 1.25 NM south of Tutukaka harbour entrance. The Leander class frigate was purposly sunk in 2000 as a dive attraction, but proved to be much more. It is now home to a large number of fish. Many different types of fish can be found there including Sweep, Conger eel, Crayfish, Kingis and a large family of John Dory. The wreck lies in 30 meters of water and is a very safe dive. Divers can explore the outside and for the more adventurous in inside provides many nooks and crannies to explore. The wreck is also the only place on the Tutukaka coast I have seen seahorses.
