A mountain with two names?

Parahaki - A mountain with two names?

Author: Blue Orb     Publisher: Northlander

It is interesting that in the Land Information New Zealand database from which this website has drawn geographical data, that the mountain in the centre of Whangarei is still referred to as Parahaki.

In fact, there are still many Whangarei residents who call the mountain Parahaki. Is this in defiance of a decision to change the name of a place that is special to them, and that they have become attached to?

Or is it because they don't understand why the name of this mountain was changed and what the significance of this name is?

Either way, I'd love to hear more about both sides...

Can anyone direct me to documented information about the change is this maunga's
(mountain's) name? I'd love to read more...
