The Back Paddock - A watched heifer never calves...

Publisher: KirstyH

On a hill in Matarau on Monday...

I was on the phone, talking This Is The Place, when the calf finally arrived. Surely I wasn't this anxious when my own kids dawdled past their due date! Shouldn't have worried; the wee red thing is just fine, and Ma Cow is a natural (of course). I know the dairy farmers, with their 500+ herds, will be laughing at me, but when you've got just the one precious heifer it's all so much more fraught. This lifestyle stuff can be a little bit scary... Trisha Fisk (of Practical Smallfarming in New Zealand fame) tells me I can neuter my own rabbits. Sure. Maybe tomorrow...

Don't you just love spring... and the joy felt by lifestylers! Surely there's
far more delight in the small things than if you had a herd of 500!
