The Scottish Settlement

Waipu - The Scottish Settlement

Author: Blue Orb     Publisher: Northlander     Date: 19th Century

Waipu is a predominantly Scottish settlement, first settled in 1853 by Nova Scotian pioneers under the leadership of Norman McLeod. Forty kilometres south of Whangarei, the major industries in the Waipu area are farming and horticulture, as is the same in much of Northland. The township, with a population of approximately 1800, is particularly well known for its Highland Games, held every year on the first of January, where there are traditional field events like hammer throwing and shot put, as well as Highland dancing and piping displays. The community is also home to the hand painted Waipu Tiles that are sold internationally and depict highlights of life in Northland.
