Once a Railway

Waimahanga Walkway - Once a Railway

Author: Whangarei District Council     Publisher: Sioux     Date: 20th Century

Popular Waimahanga Walkway was once part of the disused Kioreroa-Onerahi railway embankment. The line originally serviced Onerahi Wharf between 1911 and 1933, while the wharf was the main port for Whangarei.  From George Pt trains crossed the harbour on a 300m timber truss bridge known as 'the Gull Roost'.  The bridge had a 10m lifting span which allowed boats to pass.

Without the clatter of trains we can now enjoy much more peaceful estuarine life among the mangroves!
