Kaeo - This place called Kaeo

Kaeo lies in a valley at the heart of Whangaroa.

The small community is home to the Whangaroa Museum (in the old Post Office building), Whangaroa College and Kaeo Primary School, Methodist and Anglican churches, council offices and the town library.

The majestic pa site visible as you come into Kaeo is Pohue , Ngatiuru Pa and home of Te Ara.

The church in the middle of town, was built to commemorate 100 years since the establishment of the first Wesleyan Mission Station in New Zealand by Rev Samuel Leigh in 1822.

Several original buildings still remain in the main street, although many have been moved to other areas.  In the paddock by the Fire Station, you will see a cairn, erected to mark the original site of the Mission Station.

Kauri timber bought from a well known European settler named Spikeman was taken back to Auckland, to become Auckland’s first private dwelling. The building, named "Acacia Cottage", is now found in Cornwall Park, in central Auckland.
