The Settlement of Tangowahine

Tangowahine - The Settlement of Tangowahine

Author: Blue Orb     Publisher: Northlander     Date: 19th Century

The Tangowahine township stands at the junction of the Tangowahine river with the Wairoa river. The district was once covered with a dense kauri forest, convenient to tidal waters, and as early as the 1840s, it was a busy centre of timber industry. Many of the spars sent to England were got from here, and a large quantity of timber was brought down the river for the Aratapu and Kopuru mills.
