Ruawai is so named in recognition of the two bodies of water that sit beside the town, the Northern Wairoa River and the Kaipara Harbour. Ruawai translates to mean ‘Two Waters’.
The small township, just south of Dargaville, is a farming community, that is renowned for large plantings of kumara.
Within the community, Maori live alongside British and Dalmation immigrants, many of whom have descendants who came to the Wairoa or Kaipara district with the promise of income from kauri wood or gum.
