Learn about Adding a Story

Learn about Adding a Story

Everyone can share their stories on This is the Place : Ko Tenei Te Wahi - it's easy!

Adding a Story

Once you have chosen or found your place, you can then add your story. The first step is to give your story a name. This is one way to tell others exploring the website what your story is about.

Once you have named your story, you can then help describe your story, which will make it easier to find for others searching the website.  You can describe your story as history, biographical, a memoir or a myth or legend.

You can also use a date to describe your story, particularly if it is historical. If it is of no specific date, just select ‘This Year’ as a reflection of the date your story was written and added. This setting will change each year.

The language box is to indicate the predominant language of your text, whether it is English, Maori or other.

The final step is to add text (written words), images (photographs) and audio (oral recordings). Full explanations are below:

Text

The text can be typed straight into the text box. Your text will be automatically saved when you click on the Image or Audio tabs, or when you click on ‘Save Story’.

Images

To add images, you need to click on the ‘Upload Images’ tab. This will then guide you to browse for images, and then select them to be uploaded. The first step however, is to tick the verification box, where you agree that you have the right to use the images, as outlined in the terms and conditions.

Once you have browsed for and selected your images from your personal files, you click the ‘Upload Images’ button. This will take you to a page where you can add captions for your images, and credit the photographer or author of these images, even if it is yourself. Once you have entered all your captions and credits, click the ‘Confirm’ button. There is also an option to delete images if you accidentally download the wrong ones.

Once you confirm your images, you can then choose one (if you have more than one) as your story icon. This is the image that represents your story on the map, and is displayed in the searching part of the website

You can change any of this information simply by clicking the ‘Edit Images’ button. You can also change details later if you would like, simply by going to ‘My Place’, clicking on your story, and choosing the ‘Edit Story’ button.

If you have more than five images, you can then click on ‘Upload Images’ and begin the process again

Audio

Uploading of images and audio follow the same process. To add audio to your story, click on the ‘Audio’ tab.

Once you have browsed for and selected your audio from your personal files, you click the ‘Upload Audio’ button. This will take you to a page where you can add descriptions for your audio, and credit the speaker/s, even if it is yourself. Once you have entered all your descriptions and credits, click the ‘Confirm’ button.  Then click on the ‘Save Story’ button at the bottom of the page.

Please Note:

You do not have to add images and audio if you only have written text, and you do not have to add text or audio if you only have images. You can choose what you include in your story.

Once you have chosen your images and audio, and /or written your text, make sure to push the ‘Save Story’ button. This will save your story immediately into the website.
