Learn about Adding a Place
Adding a Place is the first step in adding a story to the website and can be done in three simple steps.
When you click on the ‘Add Story’ button anywhere on the website, it will start a three step process to add a place. The steps are:
Step 1: Type the name of your place into the box provided. Your place can be a town or city (e.g. Whangarei), a natural feature (e.g. Ninety Mile Beach), a personal place (e.g. Gravesite of Mr and Mrs John Brown), or a favourite place (e.g. Bob’s fishing spot).
If you type in a place recognised by most geographical maps, such as ‘Whangarei’ or ‘Ninety Mile Beach’, the website will recognise your place. You will then be asked if you want to add your story to these places that are already present on the website. If you don’t wish to do this, you can create a new place.
Step 2: If you type in a personal or favourite place such as ‘Gravesite of Mr and Mrs John Brown’ or ‘Bob’s Fishing Spot’ for the first time, it is not likely that these places are already recognised by the website. You will then be shown a map. Simply click on the map and it will display a marker, which you can place on the map to mark the geographical location of your place.
For best results, zoom right into the map, to make sure the placement of your marker is as accurate as possible. To zoom, you can use the bar at the left side of the map (+ is zoom in, - is zoom out), or you can simply double-click on the map and it will zoom you in.
Once you are happy with where the marker is placed, you need to describe your place in the box below the map. Descriptions include community, man made structure, historical site, burial ground, natural feature, city, town, rural, coastal, historical, family land, or suburb. Then click on ‘Add New Story’.
Step 3: This takes you to the adding a story page – for full details see Adding a Story Tutorial.
